THE POEM
THESE OLD BONES
These old bones,
these wise old bones.
Buried and unearthed,
pulled from the tilled soil,
laden with fresh hangers-on.
These curious old bones.
Roused by love to heed the call again.
These old bones,
these heavy bones.
Truths shrouded in their marrow,
sweating poison into the skin.
These brave old bones.
Born blind and bound,
held in and down.
Apart
and away.
Relief locked away on the other side of hot coals.
But these old bones,
they know too much–
Lessons learned that can be hidden,
but not forgotten.
Rage rekindles the fire inside.
I step forth into the unbearable flames.
What lies ahead...
...is free.
THE CREW
CATHERINE GIARRUSSO • EXEC PRODUCER • WRITER • DIRECTOR • PERFORMER
Catherine is a filmmaker and a healer. Her first film, “Cleaning House”, a short mother/daughter drama exploring the intangible things we inherit from past generations, received Best Storyline at the Boston International Film Festival and was recognized with an Audience Choice honorable mention at the Woods Hole Film Festival. When not producing, writing and directing her own creative work, she works in finance and production management for both narrative and documentary projects. In this capacity, she has served as everything from executive assistant to assistant accountant to business manager on a variety of studio and independent films, television pilots, public television series and national productions. Some of these include Chasing Life, Triple Nine, Lidia Celebrates America, Simply Ming, Third Rail with Ozy, Rare: Creatures of the Photo Ark and Academy Award winning, Manchester By the Sea among many others. For the past five years, she has worked on multiple production teams at GBH, Public Television Boston, which allowed her to step out of freelancing and have the time and space to delve more deeply into her personal healing journey, graduating from The Barbara Brennan School of Healing’s four-year professional studies program in 2019, while also diving deeply into ancestral lineage healing and Tantra Yoga. Catherine currently works at GBH for the acclaimed newsmagazine show FRONTLINE, sees clients in her private healing practice and is once again writing, producing and directing films of her own.

THE DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
THESE OLD BONES is a short video poem about the wounds we carry from lifetime to lifetime, how they live in the physical body, what it takes to transform them, and the tools we acquire along the way. A version of the film was first made and screened during my second year at The Barbara Brennan School of Healing. The public premiere of this newly finished version–almost exactly 10 years after premiering my last completed film–is of deep personal significance to me. Because of my childhood wounds, I have been working with a deep-seated fear of being seen and heard, especially in the fullness of my being. Of course, I didn't consciously know that for most of my life. All I could see was an agonizing pattern of starting but never fully finishing and bringing out into the world my creative work. Not wanting to keep repeating that pattern for the rest of my life is actually what drove me to embark upon an intensive, challenging and gratifying healing journey 6 years ago that continues to this day and has transformed every aspect of my life. This film captures a piece of that journey; it is my hope that seeing and hearing it touches some intuitive feeling in the viewer. While it is a film about my experience, I believe the poem and film touch upon a collective experience–especially that of the rising feminine–and speak to any Truth that is locked away inside us and the role emotional process and recognition play in unfolding greater freedom in our lives. Deepest gratitude to my outstanding crew who helped me create such a rich visual and auditory experience of the poem, and to the festival organizers, participants and audience members for the magical opportunity to continue the journey.
